Sex, Color, and Mate Choice in Guppies

The Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is well known to biologists 'color choice' and home aquarium enthusiasts alike. Scientists have studied guppies for most of the twentieth century. Some of the most intensive recent research has been conducted by behavioral ecologists, who have found that the guppy mating system makes guppies especially useful in the study of sexual selection 'color choice' and mate choice. By observing guppy behavior in aquaria, researchers hope to obtain new insights into how selection operates in natural populations. Here Anne Houde summarizes 'color choice' and synthesizes the scientific work done to date, relates the empirical findings on guppies to current themes in sexual selection theory, 'color choice' and suggests new directions for future research. This book describes the sexual behavior of guppies 'color choice' and examines how mate choice by females leads to the evolution of the conspicuous colors 'color choice' and the courtship displays for which guppies are widely recognized. The author shows that female guppies prefer males with bright color patterns, especially those with orange spots, 'color choice' and that the mating preferences of females lead to sexual selection on both color patterns 'color choice' and courtship displays of males. Houde's work addresses a number of areas that are of interest in sexual selection, including the remarkable degree of plasticity 'color choice' and evolutionary lability of sexual behavior in guppies, geographic variation in mating preferences, possible mechanisms for the evolution of female mating preferences, 'color choice' and the role of sexual selection in speciation. Discrete Choice Theory of Product Differentiation

Product differentiation - in quality, packaging, design, color, 'color choice' and style - has an important impact on consumer choice. It also provides a rich source of data that has been largely unexplored because there has been no generally accepted way to model the information available. This important study shows that an understanding of product differentiation is crucial to understanding how modern market economies function 'color choice' and that differentiated markets can be analyzed using discrete choice models of consumer behavior. It provides a valuable synthesis of existing, often highly technical work in both differentiated markets 'color choice' and discrete choice models 'color choice' and extends this work to establish a coherent theoretical underpinning for research in imperfect competition. The discrete choice approach provides an ideal framework for describing the demands for differentiated products 'color choice' and can be used for studying most product differentiation models in the literature. By introducing extra dimensions of product heterogeneity, the framework also provides richer models of firm location 'color choice' and product selection. Discrete Choice Theory of Product Differentiation introduces students 'color choice' and researchers to the field, starting at the beginning 'color choice' and moving through to frontier research. The first four chapters detail the consumer-theoretic foundations underlying choice probability systems (including an overview of the main models used in the psychological theory of choice), 'color choice' and the next four chapters apply the probabilistic choice approach to oligopoly models of product differentiation, product selection, 'color choice' and location choice.
